Our lucky winning number for the 30th Classics Club Spin is…
According to my announcement post, this means I will be reading…
Demian by Hermann Hess.
According to Goodreads… “In ‘Demian’, Hermann Hesse dramatizes the dilemma of the marked man, the outcast, the quasi-criminal hero who rejects society and strives to find a higher meaning in a strange world of his own making.” This edition is translated by Michael Roloff and Michael Lebeck, which also includes an introduction written in 1947 by Thomas Mann (another classic author I’ve yet to read), which I took a peek at already.
So… Am I happy about this?
Yes, I do believe I am happy with this pick (I was worried I’d get a really long book, and I wouldn’t have enough time to read and review it)! I’ve had this copy on my shelf for a very long time. I probably picked it up not long after I read his “Siddhartha” back in High School (the cover here is for the edition published in 1969)! I did attempt to read his “The Glass Bead Game” but that one was a DNF for me, I’m afraid (sorry, it was so long, and I didn’t understand the point of the game). I’m hoping this will be more like “Siddhartha” considering the much shorter length.
Now all I have to do is read and review this book by the 7th of August, 2022. This edition is only 141 pages, so I don’t think I’ll have too much of a problem with finishing it in time to review it, although it is a bit slow going with my Big Book of Summer novel.
What about you?
What book did you get with this Classics Club Spin?
This book was first published in 1919 and is still available (via the following affiliate links) from Amazon, Foyles, The Book Depository UK and The Book Depository US (both with free worldwide delivery), Waterstones, WHSmith, Wordery UK and Wordery US, Kobo US (eBooks and audiobooks), the website eBooks.com, Booksamillion.com, iTunes (iBooks and audiobooks), new or used from Alibris, used from Better World Books (promoting libraries and world literary), as well as from as well as from Bookshop.org and UK.Bookshop (to support independent bookshops, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic) or an IndieBound store near you.
I hope it is “enjoyable” for you. I got another Nevil Shute–since I have enjoyed both the books I’ve read by him, I hope it will go well.

I haven’t heard about this book before but I hope you enjoy it. I don’t participate this time as I’m reading less classics at the moment and had already selected a few for 20 books of summer.

It’s a blessing when you get a short book isn’t it 🙂

Well… I purposely put the shortest ones I have on the list…

To my shame, I’ve never read any Hesse, so I look forward to your review.

Good luck! I read Siddhartha many, many years ago, but nothing else by this author. I’ll be interested in hearing what you think!

I haven’t read this one but several other books by Hesse. He is an interesting author though not always the easiest. Enjoy.
I got “The Phantom of the Opera” by Gaston Leroux for my Classics Spin<

Thanks. I only just got the book from my niece who had received it from someone but didn’t want to read it herself. She thought I might want to read it, so I put it on my classic list and it came up right away. Too funny.

Yes, the first spin I did I ended up with a book I had found at a free public library while visiting my cousins only a couple days before I put together my list for the spin!

I tried to read Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain, but gave up! Hopefully this will be more readable.

Mann’s introduction was a bit… er… bombastic, but it was written after Hess won the Nobel Prize for literature. I am sure Hess’ novel will be less sticky!

I hope you enjoy Hesse. I have only tried to read one of his books, Siddhartha, years ago, but it was a DNF for me.

I enjoyed Siddhartha, actually. It was his longer work, The Glass Bead Game, that I DNF.
