Top Five Tuesday was originally created by Shanah @ Bionic Book Worm, but is now hosted by Meeghan @ Meeghan Reads. To participate, link your post back to Meeghan’s blog or leave a comment on her weekly post.

This week, Meeghan asked us to tell list our five favorite authors who were new to us this year!

I actually read 10 authors who were new to me this year – including three who are no longer alive (Edith Wharton, Molly Clavering, and Katherine Kressman Taylor). I also had a very hard time picking the fifth spot, because I had three very worthy authors to pick from. I’ll put the other two down as Honorable Mentions at the bottom. So, without any further ado….

Small Things Like These#5 – Claire Keegan.

Small Things Like These” is novella, which was a last minute request for the ARC (to read in time for #NovellasinNovember) and I was surprised that I was accepted to read and review it on such short notice. It was so good, now I will have to look into her other books!

Jane Austen Society#4 – Natalie Jenner.

I tried to get the ARC to this novel when it first came out, but no one was willing to accept my request, so I just had to go out and buy myself a print copy of The Jane Austen Society. Well, I’m certainly glad I did, because I really enjoyed it (and now I’m hoping to get the ARC of her next book – fingers crossed)!

I think you’ll find that I’m promoting “Swimming Back to Trout River” quite a bit, and rightfully so. It really is something very special, and I’m so glad I asked for and received the ARC for it.

A Bright Young Thing#2 – Brianne Moore.

I wish I had known that Brianne Moore’s first novel was culinary fiction, because I would have wanted to read it. Now I’ll just have to go back and get myself a copy of that book. Here’s my review of “A Bright Young Thing” that I read this year.

#1 – AJ Pearce.

I said it before, and I’ll say it again – I read Pearce’s second novel “Yours Cheerfully” first, and I enjoyed it so much that I went out and bought a copy of her first book “Dear Mrs. Bird” – both of which got a full 5/5 stars from me! Now I’m a true fan, and I’ll be looking out for a third book in this series, if she writes one, or anything she publishes in the future, for that matter.

Honorable Mentions go to – Olga Grushin for her novel “The Charmed Wife,” and Judy Leigh for her book “The Golden Girls’ Getaway” which both got high marks from me.

How about you?

What are your top five authors you read for the first time in 2021?

  1. This is an interesting topic. I’m not sure I could answer it without lots of searching and checking. Molly Clavering I’m pretty sure I also read for the first time this year, though, at very least!

  2. Glad you discovered and enjoyed Claire Keegan, small but perfectly formed, beautifully written. I read ‘Across the blue fields’ a number of years ago, a collection of short stories that I loved but I have a few of hers to catch up on this year.

The authors that are new (to me at least) that I have enjoyed are – Amor Towles – currently reading and swooning over ‘rules of civility.’

Snowflake by Louise Nealon – Strong Irish debut.
    Shuggie Bain – Douglas Stuart
    Colson Whitehead – Nickel Boys
    Edith Wharton – Ethan Frome

Like you, Edith Wharton was a new one for me, through a six degrees of separation challenge. More to discover.
My new year reading resolution is discovering much more new authors.

  3. Great choices Davida! I just finished the new ARC from Natalie Jenner. Although the characters are fabulous I think I enjoyed Jane Austin Society more!

I should have done this post! Maybe I still will! (It’s still Monday here!)
