What is Throwback Thursday?
I’ve noticed several of these meme on a few book blogs. For example, Susan Loves Books does one, which is (or was originally) hosted by Renee@It’s Book Talk. I also noticed that another fellow blogger, Lorrea @ What ‘Cha Readin’?, was doing this as a monthly meme for her blog. Then there’s Reading Maria who is doing something called “Last Year I Was Reading” where she compares what she’s reading now to what she read a year ago. Finally, recently I noticed that Susan Osborn over at A Life in Books is doing a series of posts called “Blasts from the Past“. In most instances, they use this to share one of their favorite reads or older reviews. Lorrea is doing it for books she enjoyed over the last decade. I also just noticed that Lisa @ Bookshelf Fantasies was doing what she calls Flashback Friday, and I hope she’s still doing them! UPDATE: another blogger, Kristin Craves Books just started what she calls #ThrowbookThursday, which I thought would be about books I’d like to throw against the wall, but is actually just back list books!
I really like all of these ideas and am essentially stealing it from ALL of them, but with my own twists.
My Twists/Instructions:
- The Chocolate Lady’s #ThrowbackThursday takes place on the Thursday before the first Saturday of every month (i.e., the Thursday before my monthly #6Degrees post).
- My posts will highlight one of my previously published book reviews, and I encourage other participants to do the same.
- If you want to participate but have a new blog that doesn’t have old reviews to highlight, you are encouraged to write a post about anything old that strikes your fancy!
- If you want to tweet or share this post, or someone else’s post, or the reviews being highlighted, please use #ThrowbackThursday!
- Please add the link to your post to the link party, via the link below.
- Please link back to this page on your post.
So… with no further ado, I give you…
The Chocolate Lady’s Throwback Thursday Book Review #18
Best Served Cold.
My Book Review for “Gentlemen & Players” by Joanne Harris.
As I await the arrival of the next book (The Narrow Door) by Harris that takes place in her fictional town of Malbry where the fictional boys’ school St. Oswald’s is located, I thought I’d remind you of the first one of these St. Oswald’s/Malbry stories that Harris wrote.
“The place is St Oswald’s, an old and long-established boys’ grammar school in the north of England. A new year has just begun, and for the staff and boys of the School, a wind of unwelcome change is blowing. Suits, paperwork and Information Technology rule the world; and Roy Straitley, Latin master, eccentric, and veteran of St Oswald’s, is finally – reluctantly – contemplating retirement. But beneath the little rivalries, petty disputes and everyday crises of the School, a darker undercurrent stirs. And a bitter grudge, hidden and carefully nurtured for fifteen years, is about to erupt.
“Who is “Mole,” the mysterious insider, whose cruel practical jokes are gradually escalating …? And how can an old and half-forgotten scandal become the stone that brings down a giant?”

If you like this idea, and want to do your own Throwback Thursday post, or if you have your own Throwback Thursday or any other type of nostalgia post, anytime during the week, I’d love it if you you let me know about your blog post in the comments or through this link party, below. (You can also just post a link to an old review you want us to look at, without making a separate post, anytime throughout the month. Be creative; you only need to be nostalgic!) I’ll keep this link party open until my next #ThrowbackThursday post (scheduled for September 2, 2021).
I’ve never even heard of this book/series or that there’s a movie about it! But it sure drew my attention and now I have to deal with another book on my TBR….! But it does appear to be worth it!
I am so sorry for:
1) Not taking part in Throwback Thursday in a couple of weeks/months. Been crazy!
2) Linking up so late! Luckily your link is still open
I can’t promise I’ll do better next time, but I will try my best.
Keep well Davida!

Thanks for those links – it was interesting to see how other bloggers had interpreted the idea of athrowback/flashback post. All I’d been doing was refreshing my old reviews by changing them over to block editor, replacing the image and breaking up paragraphs.
I think I’m going to follow your good practice of making this a feature that appears on a regular point in the month rather than when I feel like it.

To be truthful, if you read my review of that book, you’ll see I think the movie was better.
